A new AI which can generate videos based on text was announced by Microsoft in February 15. It’s called Sora and is to be used by filmmakers, visual artists and designers. Although is still not ready it will be able to create sophisticated detailed scenes and backgrounds based from a text prompt, a technology which already exists with ChatGPT. META, Google and Amazon are in a frenetic competence to create videos from text prompts. This invention certainly will have an impact in the future of humankind, just as the impact of the inventions of the Renaissance.

Indeed, we all know the impact of the printing press had in the cultural evolution of humanity. It allowed to regular people to read not only the Bible in their own language, but also the ancient Greek philosophers, Galileo’s book Dialogue and Machiavelli’s book The Pince. We all know the impact of these books as many others, such as the books of Newton. But Leonardo da Vinci, the icon of the Renaissance man, the holistic man, whose intense curiosity led him to learn geology, anatomy, geometry, astronomy, mathematics, botany, pyrotechnics, optics, zoology, engineering and produce master works of art, he also invented new technologies and draw the precursor of a helicopter. As a genius ahead of its time, he said two centuries before Newton that, “for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction”.

Leonardo da Vinci draw of an helicopter.

In ancient times, just like the Egyptians and Sumerians, the Greeks liked astronomy and the latter invented an instrument to measure the altitudes of celestial bodies, including the sun and its planets. It was the Astrolabe, the precursor to the sextant, which is effective for determining latitude on land or calm seas. The Astrolabe is a metal disc, with wires and perforations, that allows precise astronomical calculations to resolve astronomical problems.  It can measure the altitude above the horizon of a celestial body and identify stars determining its local latitude in a given local time. Since ancient times it has been used in the West and the East with many applications, not only in astronomy, but also in astrology and navigation. Is an invention that had a great impact in human progress.
